Golf on the Strip

1. Bali Hai Golf Club

Named after a Thai island referenced in Perry Como’s “Some Enchanted Evening,” the Bali Hai Golf Club mixes luxurious perks with an approachable atmosphere and fantastic Strip views. The par-71 course, designed by Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley, is a lush tropical oasis with more than 4,000 trees and seven acres of water features. The 16th hole is a par-3 island green played in full view of diners at the clubhouse’s Cili restaurant (open only during the day and geared toward business lunches and wedding buyouts).

The course starts off easy, but known for dramatically increasing in intensity with the final three holes. While Bali Hai is a tranquil escape from the chaos of the Strip, its location is in the heart of the action — near the Mandalay Bay resort, “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign and the runways of McCarran International Airport. Low-flying airplanes could be a distraction.

When desert sands aren't enough, escape to Mandalay Bay for all of the hallmarks of a tropical getaway, right on the Las Vegas Strip.

2. Wynn Golf Club at Wynn Resort

Expect luxury and scenery at the only golf course at a Strip hotel. The Wynn Golf Club is an 18-hole par-70 championship course with gorgeous landscapes of lakes, streams and more than 8,000 trees. Some remain from the days when the property was known as the Desert Inn Golf Club. The course is actually enjoying something of a second life. It was closed a few years ago to clear the way for a new lagoon-inspired attraction at the hotel. However, plans were scrapped and the Wynn reversed course, bringing back original designer Tom Fazio to ensure conditions were as ideal and well-manicured as ever. There’s even a new practice green.

The marshlands and natural springs are put to good use with players encountering water in at least 12 of the holes amidst challenging elevation and terrain. The Wynn Golf Club is a sophisticated, luxurious experience from beginning to end, beginning with the stylish Wynn Pro Shop and continuing with sleek electric carts stocked with drinks.

3. Las Vegas Golf Center at Town Square

If you’re looking for a more low-key golfing experience, the Las Vegas Golf Center is just beyond the south end of the Strip near the Town Square outdoor shopping mall. The course is just nine holes and easy to play in 90 minutes or less. It’s also illuminated for night play, a charming experience with the scenery of the Las Vegas Strip as a backdrop.

Beyond the course, there’s a driving range and the Eric Meeks School for golf lessons. The new Rockstar Bar is a fun spot to grab a drink with a rock n’ roll theme and live music on weekends.

4. Las Vegas Country Club

Take a swing on a true piece of Las Vegas history. The Las Vegas Country Club is a home development community just east of the Strip with a par-72 golf course that dates back to 1967. Lined with pine trees and mature landscaping, the course has hosted its share of PGA and LPGA tours over the years.

There have been a few updates and modifications, but the property continues to have an old-school touch, especially in the clubhouse, which has a Mid-Century Modern design with a restaurant and outdoor patio. A statue pays tribute to Dean Martin, once known to play the course daily, and a replica of a Cessna airplane can be seen in one of the water hazards — a tribute to an incident in 1981, when an FBI plane was forced to make an emergency landing while surveying mobsters on the course. The moment was recreated in Martin Scorsese’s 1995 film Casino.

Other Golf Experiences on the Strip

Located just behind the MGM Grand, the driving range has bays on three levels with a full menu that includes food, beer and cocktails. There’s even a swimming pool.
